FAQ about Hamster and Gerbil Food
What food is best for hamsters?
A hamster can eat almost any kind of seed or fruit. They are especially fond of sunflower seeds and raisins. They can also eat watermelon, peach, pumpkin seeds, grapes, apples and bananas. They also like to eat carrots and dandelions. They drink water from their water bottle.
How often do you feed hamsters?
Hamsters should be fed daily, ideally in the evening when they are most active. While they are hoarders and will store food, it's still important to offer fresh food daily to ensure they receive adequate nutrition and to prevent boredom from searching for food. The amount of food should be adjusted based on the species and individual hamster, but a good starting point is about a tablespoon of hamster nuggets per day.
Do hamsters have a favorite food?
Most hamsters love leafy greens as a treat in addition to their regular pellet or seed diet. These include spinach, broccoli spears, romaine lettuce, dandelion greens and artichokes, but they can also have carrot tops, cauliflower, sweet potato, squash and yellow peas.
Can hamsters have cheese?
Yes, hamsters can have cheese, but it should be given in very small, infrequent amounts as an occasional treat. While hamsters can digest dairy, cheese is high in fat and sodium, which isn't ideal for their health.
